In case you haven't noticed, there is a tradewind of a different sort blowing far beyond the Archipelago of Islands and into homes throughout North America. In recent years, West Indies-styled furniture has grown tremendously in popularity.

Just about every major furniture manufacturer in North America has introduced a line of furniture inspired by the 18th and 19th century Caribbean. Mostly reproductions, these collections feature exquisitely carved four poster beds, armoires, tables, desks and chairs, all reminiscent of the Danish, French and English Colonial periods. In the colonies, skilled African-West Indian craftsmen were given the task of recreating European furniture to withstand the climate of the tropics. Using their creativity, they often borrowed from their tropical environment by carving pineapple and palm frond designs into the woodwork. Beautiful mahogany was the wood of choice in the islands as it was less prone to be invaded by termites. What resulted was a unique style of elegant furniture. Many of these classics are still to be found in the old Greathouses of the Caribbean and museums. Others have been preserved throughout the generations by families on the islands.
